About this tool
Tipping customs vary significantly by country. In the UK, tipping is appreciated but not obligatory — unlike in the United States, where it is a significant part of service workers' income. In British restaurants, a tip of 10–15% is considered generous for good service, and 20% for exceptional service. Some restaurants automatically add a discretionary service charge to the bill; if they do, you are under no legal obligation to pay it if you were not satisfied. For takeaways and fast food, tipping is not expected. When splitting a bill in a group, this calculator makes it easy to ensure everyone pays their fair share of both the food and the tip.
